J.K. Rowling Announces Harry Potter 8: Real or Hoax?

A rumor circulating online states that author J.K. Rowling has “confirmed” that she is nearing completion on Harry Potter 8. Is this true or false?

It’s a hoax.

The recent announcement of a new Rowling project has been confused with a 2013 April Fool’s joke claiming that an 8th Potter book is on the way.

Rowling recently announced that she will author a “Harry Potter inspired film” entitled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This title appeared as a Hogwarts textbook in the Harry Potter series. News of this project has led to sharing of the inaccurate the April Fool’s story discussed below.

In September 2013, the April Fool’s joke from 2013 began circulating. That prank article, entitled, Exclusive: Harry Potter 8 Confirmed by J.K. Rowling!! was posted April 1, 2013 on the Story Carnivores website.

The article was written to read like a press release published by Rowling, stating that she was “75% done with the manuscript.” The fake press release ended with a “quote” from actor Daniel Radcliffe which asks, “Wait, what day is it again?”

After some commenters immediately called it an April Fool’s joke, the author, Brian, wrote, “haha, sorry everyone! I couldn’t resist!”

What Does J.K. Rowling Say?

Regarding possible future projects regarding Harry Potter from the real J.K. Rowling, the author stated in 2012, “I have been enjoying sharing information about Harry’s world on Pottermore for free, and don’t have any firm plans to publish it in book form.” The author’s website still refers to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as “the seventh and final book in the series.”

Rowling announced she would write a film inspired by a textbook from Hogwarts, but it would not be a “Harry Potter” installment.

Bottom Line

J.K. Rowling did not announce a “Harry Potter 8″ project near completion. The fake press release was merely an April Fool’s joke. She will be authoring a new film based on a Hogwarts textbook with all-new characters.

It would be great to see a prequal about Harry’s parents and when they were kids, and how they grew up, and then what happened with the original Order of The Pheonix and see what happened in detail when they died, and about snape and when he first became associated with the death eaters, and it could finish where Harry is dropped off at the dursleys :) that would be really fun

You should totally get with Elizibeth from about 4 or 5 comments. You to get together and write the book. I would read them. But I think everything you guys are saying, should totally be spread into 5 or 6 books. Let me know when you get it done =)

I actually was crying when I found out that it was a hoax. My friends all laughed at me and I was so embarrassed. This has broken the hearts of all the fandom. ????

Sirius Black and them were kids. It would be interesting to hear about them making the Marauders map and trying to become animagus without anybody knowing (ex. too much hair, snout-like nose)

If she actually wrote book 8 I would like it if she wrote about when James Potter, Sirius Black and them were kids. It would be interesting to hear about them making the Marauders map and trying to become animagus without anybody knowing (ex. too much hair, snout-like nose). Also maybe show when Peter showed signs of distancing himself from the group/start betraying them. But it won’t happen so I guess it is just me and my imagination. :)

That is so not funny!!! I was really excited I looked it up to prove my uncle wrong and he was right!! That’s a horrible joke, and I bet a lot of people thought it was real and then got mad. you should write another harry potter book about life after “he who shall not be named” also about Harry’s kids and Ron’s kids, about when they go to Hogwarts!!

Not only that but if this was true she would never have called it “Harry Potter 8″ – she would have given it a name like the rest of the series :)

I’m eagerly awaiting the prime-time American TV sitcom spin-off “Magical Harry.” It has been said that they’re ready to start production next spring. Details are sketchy, but apparently The Ghost of Dobby will be played by Jaleel White.

I won’t swear the foregoing is true.
